The Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam is a 105-minute, 60-question multiple-choice test aligned to Summer '25, with no prerequisite. This guide maps its eight official testing areas, verifies the booking and passing facts, and gives you a realistic scenario practice question plus a preparation plan built from Salesforce's own recommended resources.

Which exam this guide covers

This guide covers the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam, the credential most candidates know as the Salesforce Administrator certification. The facts and objectives below reflect the current official exam guide, which aligns questions to Summer '25.

Salesforce describes the target candidate as someone with experience setting up, governing and optimizing the platform's data, processes and user access. The exam covers the breadth of applications, end-user features, and the configuration and management options available to an administrator across the Customer 360 platform.

The certification program has two levels. The Platform Administrator credential focuses on the features and functionality used to maintain a Salesforce implementation. Platform Administrator II is the advanced tier for admins who have mastered configuration maintenance and can apply advanced features to business problems. Start with the first one.

Salesforce recommends that candidates have six or more months of hands-on experience as a Platform Administrator before attempting the exam. There is no formal prerequisite, so you can book the exam without prior certification, but the outline assumes working familiarity with a live org.

Exam format and booking facts

The exam has 60 scored multiple-choice questions, up to five unscored questions, 105 minutes, and a 68% passing score on the English version. Registration costs US$200 plus tax, and retakes cost US$100 plus tax.

These figures come from the official exam guide, so treat them as your baseline and confirm them on the scheduling page when you book, because fees and versions can change between releases.

Delivery is proctored, either onsite at a testing center or online. You may not reference hard-copy or online materials during the exam, so all preparation has to be internalized beforehand.

The up to five extra questions are unscored. Salesforce integrates them randomly to gather performance data, and they have no impact on your result, so answer every question as if it counts.

What the exam tests: the official outline

The exam guide defines eight testing areas. Data and Analytics Management carries the most weight at 17%, followed by Configuration and Setup, Object Manager and Lightning App Builder, and Automation at 15% each.

Many study lists circulating online still describe an older topic set. The current guide adds Agentforce (8%) and Productivity and Collaboration (10%) as their own areas, and it weights every area explicitly, so build your plan around the table below rather than an older topic map.

Notice how many objectives begin with 'given a scenario'. The exam presents workplace requests and asks you to choose the right configuration. Reading about features is not enough; practice deciding when each tool fits, which is why this guide includes a worked scenario in the security area.

Treat each bullet as a preparation priority. For example, the Data and Analytics Management bullet names import, update, transfer, mass delete, export and backup considerations, plus validation tools like duplicate and matching rules. Study those named considerations in Salesforce Help rather than assuming any single tool is always the right answer.

Configuration and Setup15%
Object Manager and Lightning App Builder15%
Automation15%
Sales and Marketing Applications10%

Building your preparation plan

Use the official Trailhead trailmix 'Prepare for Your Salesforce Platform Administrator Certification' as your spine, add the recommended superbadges and courses, and anchor everything in hands-on org experience.

Salesforce's exam guide names the specific self-study materials: the preparation trailmix, the Object Relationships superbadge, and the Flow Administration superbadge. The Flow superbadge maps directly to the Automation area, where you need to know screen flows, record-triggered flows, autolaunched flows and the order of execution.

If you prefer instructor-led study, the guide recommends two courses: Prepare for your Administrator Certification Exam (CRT101) and Essentials for New Lightning Experience Administrators (ADX201).

A practical way to pace yourself: weight your study time to match the outline. In a 20-hour plan, roughly three and a half hours go to Data and Analytics Management, and about three each to Configuration and Setup, Object Manager and Lightning App Builder, and Automation. This is editorial advice for pacing, not an official requirement.

Supplement with the credential page's study-and-prepare learning path, and use Salesforce Help for the specific topics named in each outline bullet, such as org-wide defaults, permission set groups, dashboards and case escalation.

  • Work through the official preparation trailmix end to end
  • Complete the Object Relationships and Flow Administration superbadges
  • Study every named example in the exam outline bullets using Salesforce Help
  • Get hands-on practice in a development or practice org
  • Review the areas with the highest weights first, then fill gaps

Scenario practice: security and access control

The Configuration and Setup area tests whether you can apply the right sharing-model control to a user request. Try this original scenario, then check your reasoning against how the role hierarchy actually behaves, based on Salesforce's Trailhead data security unit.

The role hierarchy works with organization-wide default sharing settings. It opens record access upward to users above the owner in the role hierarchy. Evaluate it within the complete access configuration, including the user’s object permissions and any other sharing grants.

Two details from the documentation are easy to miss. First, the role hierarchy does not have to match your org chart: each role represents a level of data access, so you can consolidate job titles that need the same access into a single role. Second, the hierarchy opens access upward, but it is the org-wide defaults that set the baseline, so keeping records away from other departments is controlled by those defaults, not by the hierarchy alone.

For custom objects there is an extra setting. If Grant Access Using Hierarchies is disabled for an object in the Organization-Wide Defaults, only the record owner and users granted access through sharing features can see that object's records. And when people in separate branches of the hierarchy need to share records, the documentation points to sharing rules as the tool for that job.

The exam outline lists org-wide defaults, role hierarchy, roles and subordinates, public groups, teams, and report and dashboard folders under Configuration and Setup. Practice reading a request, deciding which control it maps to, and saying why the alternatives fit less well.

Practice scenario

Original practice scenario: in a training org, SalesReview__c is a custom object with organization-wide defaults set to Private and Grant Access Using Hierarchies enabled. A sales representative owns a record. The Sales Manager role is above that representative’s role; the Finance Manager role is in a separate branch and is not above either sales role. Both managers already have Read permission on the object. Assume no sharing rules, manual shares, teams or overriding permissions grant either manager additional access. Which manager gains access through the role hierarchy, and what setting would change that result for this custom object?

Show answer

The Sales Manager gains record access through the role hierarchy. The Finance Manager does not gain access under the stated assumptions. If Grant Access Using Hierarchies were disabled for this custom object, the Sales Manager would no longer gain access solely from hierarchy position.

Salesforce’s Trailhead unit explains that hierarchy access follows roles below the user and that custom objects can disable this behavior through Grant Access Using Hierarchies. The Private baseline and the absence of other access grants are explicit assumptions here; reporting lines alone would not establish the result. Role hierarchies represent data-access needs and need not copy an organization chart.

Keeping the credential current

You must complete the Platform Administrator maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year. If you miss the due date, the certification expires.

Maintenance is part of holding the credential, not an optional extra. The badge keeps you current on new product releases, which matters because exam content follows the release cycle, as the Summer '25 alignment shows.

You can check your own certification status and maintenance requirements on Trailhead's credential verification page. When verifying someone else's credential, enter their full name as first name followed by last name; other formats may return no results, and updates can take up to one business day.

Where the credential can lead

Platform Administrator sits at the center of Salesforce's administrator track, with Platform Administrator II, Platform App Builder and Agentforce Specialist as natural next credentials, and a defined admin career path beyond them.

Salesforce describes administrators as the people who work with stakeholders to define requirements, customize the platform and help users get the most out of Salesforce. On the current career-path page, the admin role is framed as the expert who configures, automates and optimizes Salesforce to drive business value, increasingly combining data, security and automation.

Neighbor credentials extend you in different directions. Platform Administrator II targets admins who can apply advanced features to a variety of business problems. Platform App Builder covers designing and deploying custom applications with declarative customization. The Agentforce Specialist credential covers managing and optimizing Agentforce, which pairs well with the Agentforce objective on this exam.

Salesforce's own comparison of paths also lists developer, architect, consultant and analyst routes. Choose your second credential based on the work you want, and remember that no certification guarantees employment or a particular salary.
